Genuine Replacement Pre-Filters For Whirlpool Whispure Air Cleaners - Whirlpool Part #8171434. Ready-to-use right out of the box, each pre-filter will last for about 3 months depending upon the environment and are sold in a 4-Pack for a year's supply. One way to tell it is time to replace them is by the color. They are almost black to begin with and turn a light gray color when they need to be changed. Fits Models AP350, AP450 and AP510.

This review is from: Whirlpool 8171434K Large Air Purifier Carbon Pre-Filters, 4-Pack We have had our Whirlpool 450 air purifier for a little more than 2 years, and find that these pre-filters last 3+ months as advertised.
We have also tried a "generic" replacement pre-filter, which worked fine. After switching back to these (as there was not much savings with the other, and they're not offered on Amazon), I realized that these Whirlpool filters have nice little "slits" that help them attach in the right spot inside the air purifier. (That being said, the slits also make it such that there is a definite "up" or "down" to the filters.) This package of pre-filters arrived in a tidy box (convenient for storage). You need to change these out every 90 days, but you change the Hepa filter out once a year.
