With the power to humidify an entire 2,700-square-foot house, this model's bulk is quite economical. Plus, a special air-flow system lets you stow it out of the way in a corner or against a wall. Using an evaporative system and unheated, natural, evaporated water, this humidifier requires less energy than warm mist or steam units. You also won't have to deal with white dust, spray, or mist on furniture or floors. Other benefits of the evaporative system include: relief from symptoms of dry skin, itchy eyes, chapped lips, and scratchy throat; it prevents plants and furniture from becoming overly dry; reduced static electricity protects computers and electronics. In addition, this humidifier has a high-performance wick that traps mineral deposits, and a two-stage filter to reduce pollen, dust, smoke, and other odor-causing particles from the air. Two water bottles hold and disperse up to 13 gallons of water per day, for up to 24 hours, at 30 percent humidity before needing refilling. The bottles remove and refill easily and neatly in the sink via an included hose. The digital humidistat makes it easy to set preferred humidity by just pressing a few buttons. The humidistat also automatically turns itself on and off to maintain a set humidity level, displaying both current and desired humidity levels, at all times, on the LCD. In addition, this humidifier's fan offers variable speeds, including a quieter nighttime setting. This humidifier measures 28 by 13-3/4 by 22 inches with casters attached below, allowing easy transport from room to room. Bemis covers this unit under a one-year limited warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Comment: The first one broke in 2 months and the repair did not make it thru 2 winters ! When it worked it was too loud for a bedroom while on HI and at lower speeds did not perform well ! Along with expensive filters this is a no go !!

Summary: Replacing our old, non-digital Bemis model with this one 2009-12-13
Comment: We had a Bemis humidifier (12 gal) that just died after working well enough for NINE winter seasons. As best I can tell, this Essick 4D7-800 is the same model (apparently Essick took over the Bemis products years ago), but with added digital controls. In my online research for a new "whole-house" humidifier yesterday, I found more complaints than praise for ALL brands and models. So, I just ordered this unit, with fingers crossed, in hopes I can get 9 years out of this one, too. Yes, our old unit was cheaply made and the blowing air was moderately loud on high, but it did ok for our 4300 sq. ft home. (We also have a humdifiying unit on our entire heating system, but still need a boost from that!) We ran it pretty nonstop for about 4-5 months a year, only cleaned it once after each season, and changed the wick (~$17) once a year. We refilled the large, heavy plastic bottles once a day and added a small cap of generic bacteriostat treatment to about every other bottle refill. The appearance of the unit itself is not as bad as the fake plastic wood look, and pretty unobtrusive in our foyer.

Summary: Junk but might work 2009-12-05
Comment: This unit may turn out to work very well which will be a plus. The down side is that the quality is awful. I mean below awful. It is a thin warped plastic shell with the fan sitting on the top. Parts barely fit together. The fan is very loud and to complete the picture, it makes a loud humming sound. The company couldn't of spent more than $5-$10 building this thing. Maybe less. On the other hand, if it ends up solving our lack of humidity crisis I will give it a star or two. I wish some manufacturer would build a quality high volume humidifier. Your not suppose to keep having to buy the razor over and over again in a razor-blade scenario and products that you pay a couple of hundred dollars for shouldn't look like they came from the local dollar store.

Summary: good while it worked---but poor reliability 2009-10-24
Comment: This is a big humidifier for adding moisture to several rooms or an entire house. My house is ~1800 sq feet and gets very dry in the winter. This humidifier did a nice job of adding a lot of moisture to the house before it died. Within the first year, the motor stopped working, and I had to send the entire motor unit in for repair. Then it died again---same problem with the motor failing. Very frustrating, and now I have a large piece of useless plastic. I would not recommend Essick/Bemis products because of very poor reliability.

Summary: works great; but noisey as heck 2009-03-21
Comment: the product is pretty cheaply built; but actually works great....pumps lots of moisture into the air. downside...it is very noisy; so much in fact i run it only on speed 1 (it has 9 speeds). the noise is not only just fan noise, but the fan motor is very noisy as well. i'm very unhappy with the noise level; but haven't found anything better regarding moisture output. i also have two smaller hunter units which are almost impossible to hear; too bad hunter doesn't make a larger model...i buy it in a second.
