The Austin Air Healthmate Plus employs a certified HEPA filter which can remove 99.97 percent of particles larger than 0.3 microns. Since mold spores are larger than 0.3 microns, the Austin Air Healthmate filters can remove almost all mold spores inside rooms. The Austin Air Healthmate Plus contains nearly 15 pounds of activated carbon, which can remove aflatoxin, trichothecene and ochratoxin mold toxin gases, zeolites which can adsorb aflatoxins and hydrogen sulfide and Potassium Iodide which helps eliminate objectionable odors, such as formaldehyde.
I recommend a 30 day trial of the Austin Air Healthmate Plus for anyone who suspects indoor mold toxins are adversely affecting them. It is rated to provide two air exchanges per hour in 1500 square feet of average height rooms. For particulate filtration, these are at the high end of good. They have reduced the overall irritant load on my system. With constant use, over months, I have had improved breathing and great lessening of most severe symptoms. Nearly constant headaches are mostly gone and (OTC) medication use for palliative relief is almost nought.
All that said, it's all about the carbon! For that great fresh and clean air effect, the highest weight of carbon/iodine (etc.) mix is necessary, so buy this filter model (Healthmate Plus) not one of the many other models Austin offers. But, to make these work, I estimate the filters on these sized units must be changed out every 3 weeks!
The most dramatic improvements in air quality last about long enough to go past the 30 day satisfaction return period. After about 3 weeks, I was wondering "Is it not as good?" "But it was so great?"
